Weekly Update 18.11.2022
Dear Parents/Carers,
At NUSA this week:
This week we have celebrated Anti-Bullying week in school. We had assemblies led by our Anti-Bullying ambassadors, as well as activities in student briefing and our Odd Socks Day. We will not tolerate bullying at NUSA and we are making sure that all of our students know how to report bullying should they experience it or witness it.
A reminder of what bullying is:
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.
If you are concerned about a child being bullied, please contact our pastoral team so that we can investigate any issues.
We celebrated Children In Need today in school. A huge ‘Thank you’ for all of your contributions to both Children in Need and our Prom. We are incredibly grateful.
Over the next few weeks, we will be reducing our sales of water bottles in the canteen. The cost of water bottles have increased significantly and it is far better value for our students to have a desert with their meal, rather than a drink of water that they can get for free from our water stations. Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle in to school each day.
Coming up at NUSA:
On Friday 25th November, we will be holding a mock interview day for Year 11 students. More details will follow on this.
On Tuesday 29th November, we will be holding a Winter Fair to raise money for our Prom Committee. For a donation of £1, all students can wear non-school uniform.
Christmas trips – we will be holding our annual Christmas trips on Thursday 15th December. Students have had letters about this already. Please note the deadline for payment is Friday 2nd December 2022.
Attendance/lates:
Each week, we now send home a text letting you know your child’s attendance to date. If a child has more than 19 days off in an academic year, they are classed as Persistently Absent. We will be getting in touch with parents where children are close to 19 days to see how we can help improve their attendance.
SEND drop in:
We are going to start running monthly SEND drop in sessions from 3-5pm once per month. This is to allow parents/carers the opportunity to see us if they have any concerns about their child and SEND. The first drop in session will be held on Wednesday 23rd November from 3-5pm. If you wish to attend, please contact reception to book an appointment slot.
Safeguarding corner:
A rising cost of living is taking its toll across the country.
From universal credit to maternity and paternity pay, there are lots of benefits and entitlements available for families. And you may be eligible for benefits that you’re not currently claiming. Dennis Hussey from the Money Advice Service says: “It's worth checking that you’re receiving everything you may be entitled to.?Turn2Us have a helpful benefits checker tool.”?You can also look for help with essential bills or search for charities who offer grants to cover the cost of white goods like washing machines.
And don’t miss out on child benefit, which will see you receive £21.80 a week for your child, and an extra £14.45 a week for any additional children. “You can claim if you’re responsible for bringing up a child who is under 16 or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training”, explains Sue. “Only one person can claim child benefit for a child but there is no limit to how many children you can claim for.”
The UK government website has a full list of the benefits you may be able to claim?if you have children.
