International Women's Day
Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day. Many groups around the world choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues
The theme for 2013 was inspiring young women into politics. Post 16 was lucky enough to have two exceptionally inspirational young women, Amy Leivers and Hayley Thompson represent NUSA Post 16 at this year’s event.
The day consisted of a tour of Number 10 Downing Street as well as the opportunity to work alongside Nottingham North MP Graham Allen. The girls also had the chance to sit in on the select committee in the houses of Parliament and finally ending the day with a tour of the Houses of Parliament and the Palace of Westminster, both Amy and Hayley said “It was a truly inspirational day”.
