Combined Science Synergy OR Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

Combined Science is a two GCSE qualification pathway that covers material on Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will obtain two GCSEs as an average of your performance in the three science specialisms. Triple Science is a three GCSE qualification pathway that covers the same material as GCSE Combined Science, but will go into further detail and further topics in each science specialism. As a result, you will obtain individual GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Both pathways will prepare you for taking Science courses beyond GCSE and you can achieve the highest grade of a 9 studying either.

Both pathways combine traditional science material with modern applications. The emphasis will be on you applying your knowledge to new situations, as well as recalling and remembering key information. You will gain lots of practical experience, and will be expected to complete over 20 required practicals which you could be tested on in a number of different ways.

You will be taught the Combined Science material in Year 9, with a view that those of you who show excellent attitude and understanding, throughout the year, will have the potential to move onto the Triple Science pathway in Year 10. There will be a discussion between you and your Science Teacher towards the end of Year 9 to decide which pathway will be the best for you.

Some of the topics you will be studying in Year 9 include: Cells in plants and animals; Atomic structure; Systems of the body; Radiation and risk; Lifestyle and health; Preventing, treating and curing diseases; The Earth’s atmosphere; Inheritance, variation and evolution; States of matter.

Through studying Science you will develop your analytical skills (paying attention to detail and making logical and reasoned arguments) and problem-solving skills (using mathematics to help). These can be extremely useful in any area of employment.
