In Child Development, you will explore how children develop from birth up to 8 years old. You will develop your understanding of how different toys and play activities help children develop at different ages and in different areas of development.

Unit 1: Patterns of child development (sit a 1 hour exam)

This unit is the exam unit where you will be taught to answer multiple-choice questions, short questions based on a case study and longer essay style questions. This unit teaches you to apply your knowledge in different ways. You will learn about how children grow and develop from birth to eight years old and how child care professionals help children with this development. (50 marks) This is 30 GLH

Unit 2: Promoting children’s development through play (coursework 1)

This unit will help you develop evaluation skills. It will help you identify positives and negatives of different toys and play activities. You will learn how different toys and play activities will help children’s development and how a range of different activities should be chosen for children of different ages to help them reach their potential. This 30 GLH.

Unit 3: The principles of early years practice (coursework 2)

This unit will help you learn how to communicate with different types of people and how to respect people’s differences. It will help you understand and use different techniques needed to build positive relationships. You will learn how a child care professional can include all children from different backgrounds in different play activities. You will learn how this will improve children’s self-esteem and confidence. You will also look at how one-on-one support from an adult can support a child’s development. This is 60 GLH.

Assessment

The qualification total is 120 GLH.

Unit 1: Exam = 30 GLH
Unit 2: Coursework = 30 GLH
Unit 3: Coursework = 60 GLH
