English Literature

Exam Board: AQA

In English Literature you will cover five main elements:

A Shakespeare text

Students will study Macbeth. They will read the whole play and analyse key characters, themes and the context in which it is set.

A 19th Century novel

Students will study A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. They will read the whole text and analyse key characters, themes and its context.

Modern text

Students will study a 20th Century text in its entirety taking into account the staging, context, characters, language used and key themes that arise.

Power and conflict poetry

Pupils will be given an anthology of poems that we will study throughout the three year GCSE. We will consider key themes, the effects of language choices, the context and also key links between the poems.

Unseen poetry

For this section pupils will study how to approach a poem they have never seen before, analyse the key themes, ideas and language.

Assessment

100% examination.

Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes
Paper 2: 2 hours 15 minutes
